Mary McLeod Bethune was an early advocate for women in the military. She served as a special assistant to the Secretary of War for the WAAC (Women's Auxiliary Corps) and was charged to recruit African American women during World War II. She was named honorary General of the WAAC for National Defense and was an advisor for the Women's Army Corps.
